A New Chapter for a Historic Building in Trakai: Fenstercraft Aluminium Joins the Vytauto St. 2 Reconstruction

If you've walked through the center of Trakai, you've probably passed the quiet, vacant building at Vytauto street 2, a solid piece of 1950s architecture that's stood empty for years. That's about to change, and we're proud to say Fenstercraft Aluminium will be part of it.

A building with history

Built more than 70 years ago, this Stalinist-era structure once housed the local communist party committee, later served as the Trakai municipal office, and eventually fell out of use altogether. Despite the years of neglect, it never lost its place in the town's history: its proportions, its facade rhythm, and its quiet presence on the street all still speak to a very specific moment in the region's architectural history.

Now, under a reconstruction project by the Vilnius-based architect studio Processoffice, the building is being brought back to life as a public space for the town, with room for exhibitions, a café, workshops, and events in the courtyard. The idea isn't to erase what the building was, but to let it keep its character while finally giving people a reason to walk through its doors again.

Fenstercraft Aluminium will help bring the historic building back

We've won the contract to design, manufacture, and install the aluminium systems for the entire reconstruction, from the windows and doors to the facade itself. It's the kind of project we genuinely enjoy: one where the goal isn't just performance, but staying true to how a building originally looked and felt.

To do that, we're working with Reynaers Aluminium systems across the whole building:

  • MasterLine 8 (HI/HI+): for windows and doors that meet today's thermal and energy standards without looking out of place on a historic facade
  • ConceptSystem & ConceptPatio (CS/CP): for sliding and patio doors that open the building up to new outdoor spaces
  • ConceptWall 50/60 (CW50/60): for the facade sections, keeping the building's original window divisions and proportions intact

Together, these systems let us hit the energy efficiency this reconstruction calls for, while respecting the architects' intention to keep the building's original silhouette recognizable, down to the way the windows were originally divided.

What Heritage Restoration Means to Fenstercraft Aluminium

Projects like this are a reminder of what aluminium construction can do beyond new builds: give an old, forgotten building a legitimate second life, without pretending its history didn't happen. We're looking forward to seeing Vytauto st. 2 open its doors again, and to sharing progress here as the work moves forward.
